Ban on Dumping Waste in the Baltic
The International Maritime Organization has decided to forbid the dumping of waste in the Baltic Sea by cruise ships.
The UN agency has responded to concerns from the countries bordering the Baltic. Starting in 2013 the ban will be imposed on newly built cruise ships, extended to all passenger vessels in the Baltic starting in 2018.
The TT news agency reports that one condition for the ban is that the countries involved build sufficient facilities to receive wastes from cruise ships.
