Womb Transplants on the Horizon?

Published måndag 4 oktober 2010 kl 12.06
Women may soon be able to undergo uterus transplants.

Researchers in Gothenburg may become the first in the world to make the transplant of a human uterus possible. This procedure could provide an alternative to adoption and surrogate pregnancy.

The scientists here have already transplanted wombs in animals, and now, they are doing the transplants on baboons, who are more similar to humans. They plan to start conducting the first uterus transplants on humans in two years.

Women born without a womb and women who have had hysterectomies because of cancer could benefit from the surgery, but it has also raised ethical questions.
