Freed Mink Perish as Roadkill

Published måndag 4 oktober 2010 kl 13.39

Some 17,000 mink were released from a farm in the middle of the night in southern Sweden, reports Swedish Radio news. Many of the freed mink have been run over by passing motorists.

Police got the call from an automobile driver, who saw a number of furry creatures scurrying across the road, and say they are still looking for traces of whoever released the valuable animals. The owner estimates that they were worth at least hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Mink farms have come under a criticism in Sweden in recent months for the way they treat the animals. And during the summer, animal rights activists blockaded a road in front of one of the farms.
