Bad Month for Small Business

Published onsdag 6 oktober 2010 kl 16.16
More Swedish small businesses went bust in September compared with last year.

While the economy seems to be on the up, a sudden rise in businesses going bust is surprising and worrying experts.

The monthly figures from credit agency UC show that 487 companies went bust in September. This is a 15 per cent increase compared with last year. The rest of the year had seen this figure going down.

Roland Sigbladh at UC says that, since almost all economic indicators are positive, it is surprising for so many more companies to be failing in a single month.

It is mostly small companies that have been hit - 60 per cent of all the failed companies have had two or fewer employees.

During the whole of 2010 there has been a 15 per cent fall in the number of companies going bust - and Sigbladh says that it is too soon to say whether this trend has really been broken.
