Malmö mayor faces US criticism

Published torsdag 14 oktober 2010 kl 10.35
Reepalu, of the Social Democrats, has been mayor since 1994

A jewish organisation best known for hunting down nazi war criminals is trying to block a Swedish mayor's chances of winning an international award, according to the Sydsvenskan paper.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre of Los Angeles says that Malmö's mayor, Ilmar Reepalu, should not be allowed in the World City Mayor contest, because of his criticism of the state of Israel in the spring.

The mayor allegedly said that jews in Malmö should distance themselves from Israel, or risk being blamed for the situation in the middle east.

Reepalu has stated several times that he was misquoted, and that he does not think that residents of Malmö bear any responsibility for the conflicts in the middle east.
