1810: The Bernadotte Dynasty Begins
On October 20th, 1810, the French general Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, landed in Helsingborg in southern Sweden, as heir to the throne of this country, and soon to be King Carl the 14th Johan.
There are celebrations in Helsingborg, including royal visits, music, theater, and an art exhibition.
But how did this happen? Why did the Swedish government ask a Marshal of France to become heir to the throne? We asked Arnold Barton, Professor Emeritus of History at the University of Southern Illinois, Carbondale.
