Warning of phoney asylum trips
Swedish EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmström says thousands of people from Serbia and Macedonia are exploiting the rules to enter Sweden and other European Union countries.
Last year the EU removed visa requirements for visitors from the two former Yugoslav republics.
Malmström says that since then four thousand Serb citizens have arrived in Sweden and applied for asylum here. She calls the development extremely disturbing and warns that it seriously threatens the visa-free arrangement.
Malmström, who is the EU Commissioner for Home Affairs, tells Swedish Radio News that Serbs and Macedonians are being tricked into paying for organized bus trips into the EU.
She has written to the governments of the two countries demanding that they take action.
