Swedish ice hockey star Peter Forsberg could be on his way back to the NHL and is expected to sign a contract with the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday or Wednesday, according to newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

Forsberg, 38, led the Colorado team to two Stanley Cups, in 1996 and 2001, and could play his first game with the team as early as Tuesday evening according to the newspaper.

The club has allegedly asked for the so called international transfer card after Forsberg began training with the team, based in Denver, two weeks ago. Forsberg hopes that his new skates, with more room for the toes, will prevent cramp in his injured right foot and allow him to play professional hockey for another few seasons.

Forsberg left the NHL three years ago due to injuries. He has instead played sporadically for Swedish hockey club Modo.
