Bildt: Egypt enters transition period

Published onsdag 2 februari 2011 kl 09.52
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Tuesday promised to step down in the September elections.

In response to Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s speech on Tuesday, where he promised not top run for another term in the September election, Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said it was the end for the Mubarak era but that the announcement should have come earlier.

While everyone is waiting to see if Mubarak’s announcement will put an end to the ten day uprising Bildt said that the conditions are now there for Egypt to transform into a “democratic and pluralistic” society.

“We have now formally begun the transition to what we, from a European perspective, hope will be an era of a democratic, pluralistic and stable Egypt,” Bildt told Swedish Radio News. “How this transition will be organised is very important, and it requires a wide national consent and debate within Egypt.”
