SD politician forced to resign over racist letters

Published onsdag 2 februari 2011 kl 17.40

County politician Leif Vogel, who represents the Sweden Democrats in Knivsta, just north of Stockholm, has left his job and the party after sending racist emails to daily newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

In one of his letters he wrote that a flight leaving for Stockholm gathered the “world’s backyard” with black men and women in headscarves and “clusters of children.” He added that the gate also had a few shy Swedes hiding in a corner despite the fact that “they would have to pay for the circus.”

But the comments weren’t appreciated within the Sweden Democratic party. Party leader Jimmie Åkersson has worked hard to clean up the image of the party.

According to the newspaper Vogel has also sent racist emails to other organisations, including think tank Global Utmaning, after they wrote an opinion piece published in rival newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

He also allegedly wrote negative comments about immigrants online using a pen name, according to the newspaper.
