Forsberg makes his NHL comeback

Forsberg's comeback marred by defeat

Published lördag 12 februari 2011 kl 10.41

Sweden's Peter Forsberg made his long awaited NHL comeback for Colarado Avalanche against Columbus Blue Jackets overnight on Friday but the game ended in disappointment for his team with a 3-1 defeat in Ohio, a sixth consecutive loss for the Avalanche.

The good news for Forsberg , wearing his familiar number 21 on his Avalanche jersey, was that his first NHL match in nearly three years saw no injury recurrences to his right foot and he enjoyed more game time on the ice, although the 37 year old was not best pleased with his performance wide left alongside centre Matt Duchene and right wing Milan Hejduk.

"I'm playing with two good players. Maybe I should just give the puck to them instead of me having it," he said.

"Hopefully we learned from each other from this game, and go from there. And win a game – that's what we have to do," Forsberg told AFP news.

Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said of Forsberg to The Denver Post -"He actually played better than I thought he would. It's a good step for Peter, but it still doesn't hide the fact that we lost the game."

Forsberg, a two-time Olympic gold medallist played for his home club Modo in the Swedish Elite League last year and began training with the Avalanche last month to see if he was up to the physical challenge of a return to the NHL.

"Our line played in their corners most of the game," Forsberg said. "We battled, we were trying, we were wrestling. We got it out of there a couple of times but not too many. Just overall, our team, we don't have too much confidence right now. But from my side, I'm just going to keep working. It was my first game in a long time. I'm just going to take one game at a time and hopefully get better and better."

Forsberg expects to play on Saturday against Nashville.
