The Swedish foreign minister says that it is "regrettable" that the USA has used its veto to block a United Nations motion on the Israel/Palestine issue. "All the other members of the security council were in favour" writes Carl Bildt on his blog.

The motion would have condemned Israeli settlements built on occupied land. It is the first time that the US veto has been used since Barack Obama became president.

The Swedish foreign minister says that the motion was effectively in line with the EU strategy for peace in the Middle East, and that Sweden had supported it from the start.

After the vote the US ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice, said that the US move did not imply support for the settlements, but that the US thought that the proposed UN motion would make peace negotiations harder.
