Thousands missing out on housing benefit

Published söndag 20 februari 2011 kl 12.16
The value of your home is not counted when deciding eligibility for the subsidy

Tens of thousands of pensioners in Sweden are missing out on claiming housing subsidy, reports the Sydsvenskan newspaper.

A survey shows that many pensioners believe that the subsidy is not available for home owners, or those with savings. There are 51,000 pensioners who could claim the subsidy, but who have not done so.

The Swedish Pensions Agency now says to Sydsvenskan that it is working hard to get more information out to older people, and to make it easier to claim housing subsidy.

Insurance expert Richard Wirenius says that assets of up to 15,600 US$ are not counted - and that the value of a person's home is not seen as an asset.
