"Replace the tv-licence with a media-fee"

The tv-licence that currently must be paid by households that own a television set, should be replaced by a general "media-fee" paid by all households, says Eva Hamilton, who heads the Swedish public service television SVT.

In an opinion piece in the daily Dagens Nyheter, Hamilton says the changes are necessary as more and more people watch TV on computers or their mobile phones.

On Monday, the parliament's culture committee announced it wants a review of the financing of the TV license which pays for national public service broadcasting.

What the public service radio and television companies do not want to see is a public service that is financed via the tax system, as they fear it will jeopardise their independence.
