Ships still trapped in Baltic Sea ice

Published måndag 28 februari 2011 kl 10.09

Some 10 freighters are still trapped in the ice in the frozen northern Baltic Sea - waiting for Swedish or Finnish ice breakers to come to their aid.

Below-freezing temperatures and strong winds trapped 60 ships in the area over the week-end in what was supposed to clear sailing.

The authorities say this is the biggest expansion of ice since 1987 - and that the Baltic is frozen as far south as the islands of Gotland and Öland off the Swedish southeast coast.
