Record number of Peace Prize nominees
The Nobel Institute in Olso, Norway, has received a record 241 nominations for this year’s Peace Prize.
The nominations will be kept a secret even after the prize has been announced but people connected with Wikileaks and those linked with the revolutions in the Arab world are though to be in the running.
“It increases almost every year,” Nobel Institute director Geir Lundestad told news agency AFP. Last year 237 people were nominated.
Though the names will remain secret for another 50 years the institute did release some information.
The list this year is made up of 53 organisations and 188 individuals. And Lundestad made no secret that events in the Arab world have influenced the list.
“We have received several proposals that reflect the situation we are now seeing,” especially in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya, he said.
