Ice may halt shipping in northern Baltic

All shipping may grind to a halt in the northern Baltic Sea on Wednesday due to thick ice and gale force winds, according to the Swedish Maritime Administration.

“There’s a gale force warning for the area with southerly winds and that can cause strong pressure on the ice,” Jonas Vedsmand told news agency TT.

Last weekend strong winds caused 60 ships to be caught in the ice. Now the meteorological office is forecasting even stronger winds on the way.

“Ships in the area will be assisted by icebreakers so there is no danger,” said Vedsmand.

“But as the ice situation is looking serious we don’t want to have more vessels in the area – for their own safety.”
