Östros is reportedly Persson's favorite
The left-leaning tabloid Aftonbladet reports that Sweden's former Prime Minister, Göran Persson, has allegedly been using his political weight to pressure local leaders into supporting Thomas Östros as the Social Democrats' next leader.
An unnamed source told the tabloid, "He's rung around and scared people in the northern districts."
Östros is the party's current economic spokesperson and worked closely with Persson for many years as both education minister and industry minister in the former prime minister's government.
The party is in the last stages of selecting a new leader after Mona Sahlin announced that she would resign.
