The Swedish Board of Health and Welfare is to fast track an exception to current data protection rules, to allow dentists and other health care providers to continue to send mobile text message reminders to patients.

Many Swedish clinics use text messages to warn patients of upcoming appointments, but it was revealed last week that this breaks the current rules, established in 2008, as the text messages are not encrypted and could be intercepted.

Maria Jacobsson at the Board of Health and Welfare, tells Radio Sweden they are hopeful that the exemption will be in place by the Autumn.
