Surgery cures diabetes faster than weight loss

Published onsdag 13 april 2011 kl 11.29

Gastric bypass surgery could help cure those suffering from type 2 diabetes within a couple of days, before the patient starts loosing weight. Scientists have now set out to find out why the benefits can be noticed so soon after surgery.

“We might operate on a patient on Monday and that person is no longer showing signs of diabetes on Wednesday,” Jan Hedenbro, a doctor at Lund’s University Hospital, told Swedish Radio News.

But how it is possible to cure diabetes in such a short time is still a mystery to scientists.

“We know there might be several reasons. Weight loss, smaller portions or a change in the signals between the stomachic-intestinal canal…” Hedenbro said. “Now that we have seen this effect and we know it exists we want to find out why and what is happening.”

An estimated 250 million people world wide suffers from the type 2 diabetes, and the disease is closely connected to obesity. If a cure could be found it would save society a lot of money since those who have been diagnosed often require life long medicine and treatment.
