Record number of applicants for universities
A record number of people applied for university this year. After the application deadline passed on Friday 346 239 men and women had applied for university an increase of almost 9 000 applicants compared to last year, reports news agency TT.
One of the reasons, according to Åke Lernefalk, spokesman for the Swedish Agency for Higher Education Services, is that the baby boomers from the 1990s are starting to apply.
More than 52 000 applicants waited until last minute on Friday with 4 995 applications being filed only one hour before deadline. In previous years the large number of people going online to apply on the last day has caused technical problems but this year, Lernefalk said, the system was prepared.
