Calls to clarify alcohol rules on retirement homes

Published torsdag 28 april 2011 kl 16.14

Old people living in retirement homes should have the same rights as everyone else to drink alcohol if new proposed changes to the law are passed.

In a report commissioned by the government several suggestions have been made to improve the situation for those living in retirement homes, including making the rules clear on alcohol.

Today it is up to each retirement home to set the rules and while some allow patients to drink wine and beer with dinner others refuse to serve alcohol.

Social Affairs Minister Maria Larsson told newspaper Dagens Nyheter on Thursday that there shouldn’t be any doubt that even old people have the right to decide themselves if they want to have a drink or not.
