Many claiming benefits due to illness
A new survey says that a lot of the people who can no longer receive sickness insurance payments have simply moved on to claiming basic benefit.
The centre-right government's reforms of the social insurance system have been designed to get ill people to take a job instead. But now a report from the Swedish Association of Local Authorities says that one fifth of all basic benefit payments (socialbidrag) are going to people who have no income due to illness.
The survey was carried out in three municipalities - Hässleholm and Halmstad in the south and Borlänge in central Sweden.
