Annika Östberg is free
Fifty-seven year old Annika Östberg is free, after spending 30 years in American and Swedish prisons.
In 1983 she received a lifetime sentence as the accomplice for a double murder in California. The killer, her then-boyfriend, committed suicide in jail, and critics charged that Östberg was being punished because the actual murderer could not be.
After numerous protests from Sweden and pressure from the Swedish government, three years ago the California authorities allowed Östberg to serve her sentence in this country. For the past year she has been in a rehabilitation cooperative.
One of the murder victims was a police officer, and members of the American law enforcement community strongly fought the transfer to Sweden and the granting of a fixed sentence.
