The Swedish Armed Forces are trying to find out whether a foreign submarine was in fact gliding through the waters of Stockholm's archipelago three weeks ago.

A woman was taking her dog for a walk early in the morning of April 13 when she spotted what she took to be a submarine heading eastward through the Baltic Sea.

Hanna Harge says that she assumed it was a Swedish vessel doing military exercises and asked the Marines to alert the locals, so that they would keep their leisure boats away and minimize the risk of a collision. But the Marines said that they were not doing exercises there.

Harge and her family had taken photos of the apparent submarine, which they then turned them over to the Marines.

Philip Simon, press secretary of the Armed Forces, says that any possible violation of Swedish territory is always taken extremely seriously and carefully investigated. He told news agency TT that the investigation would take a couple of weeks.
