Swedish Radio News reports that a senior Argentinean government official is demanding lifetime imprisonment for Alfredo Astriz, the former military officer widely believed to be responsible for many murders in the 1970’s, including that of the 17 year old Swedish citizen Dagmar Hagelin.

Martin Rico, a lawyer at Argentina’s Ministry for Human Rights, has demanded the lifetime sentence for 12 kidnappings and five murders.

Astiz has already been sentenced in his absence to life in prison in France for the murders of two French nuns. The crimes were committed during the “dirty war” of the military dictatorship of the 70’s, when 9000-30,000 people were kidnapped, tortured, and killed.
