New trial for 2006 honor killing
The Supreme Court has granted a new trial the case of a six year old honor killing in Högsby, some three hours south of Stockholm, after the man who was convicted of the brutal murder retracted his confession.
Abbas Rezai, then 20-years-old, was brutally beaten and murdered in an apartment in Högsby in 2006 and the motive is thought to be that the family did not approve of his relationship with their daughter. Someone first poured hot oil over him and then stabbed him to death.
The flat belonged to his girlfriend’s family and several family members, including the parents, where in the house when the murder was committed.
The parents were freed after the then 18-year-old brother claimed sole responsibility for the crime. He was later sentenced to four years in a juvenile detention centre.
But last year a younger brother came forward and claimed that his brother was innocent and that it was the father who was responsible for the murder. The convicted man has also changed his story and according to the court the parents would have most likely been convicted had it not been for the confession.
