Colliding traditions

All Soul's Day, Halloween

All Saints and Halloween
(7:34 min)

Tomorrow is one of the most respected annual traditions in Swedish life – with many thousands of Swedes visiting the graves of departed family members and friends – placing an ocean of candles burning through the autumn darkness in graveyards all over the country.

But this somber celebration stretching back well over a thousand years is getting some stiff competition from a merry-making, new-comer American import – Halloween – with the witches, goblins and even vampires landing here both before and on All Soul's Day itself.
