A man who was severely burnt in a housefire last night is now suspected by police of starting the fire, which killed a 45-year old woman.

Swedish Radio Kalmar reports that around 6 p.m.on Friday the emergency services were called to a fire in north Hagby, south of Kalmar. The injured man was outside the house, which was burning fiercely. The woman was found inside the house; she died soon afterwards. The fire could not be controlled, and was allowed to burn itself out.

Police commander Kent Andersson says to Swedish Radio Kalmar that the 53-year old man is suspected of murder and arson; partly because the two were known to have had a series of disagreements.

The man will be interviewed by police, but is first receiving intensive care for his burns. He denies committing any crime.
