The burnt house in north Hagby

A 53-year old man is suspected of murdering a 45-year old woman and trying to hide the crime by burning down her house, near Kalmar.

The man is himself badly burned. He denies any crime, and says that the house fire began when a candle fell over. Police say that the man has not explained why he alone was able to escape the fire, reports news agency TT.

The police plan to measure the amount of carbon monoxide in the dead woman's blood, to see whether she was dead before the fire began.

By monday the prosecutor must decide whether to hold the man.
