About SR International and Radio Sweden

SR International’s Assignment

SR International is the international and multicultural channel of public broadcaster Swedish Radio, with programs in 14 languages. Our External Service (Radio Sweden) keeps Swedes abroad up-to-date with events back home, and tells the foreign audience about Sweden. Our Immigrant Languages Service is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural, and while primarily intended for immigrants within Sweden, also reaches an audience abroad through our webcasts.

The External Service - Radio Sweden broadcasts are in Swedish, English, German, Russian and Belarusian. The traditional means of reaching audiences abroad has been through shortwave and mediumwave. Since the beginning of the 1990’s we have also used satellites, both to bring our programs directly to listeners with satellite receivers, and to reach local radio stations for rebroadcast. We also relay a number of Swedish Radio’s domestic programs in Swedish, as well as programs from our Immigrant Languages Service in Assyrian/Aramaic, Kurdish, Persian and Romani. Internet webcasting has also provided us with a new way to reach listeners, who can access our programs on demand, rather than at the mercy of schedules and the ionosphere.

Our journalism is based on credibility and impartiality. Swedish Radio is independent and not affiliated to any political, religious, financial, public or private interests.
