Man With Axe Attacks Pilots

Published onsdag 29 september 2004 kl 13.34

A man on a Norwegian regional flight linking the northern towns of Narvik and Bodö attacked two pilots with an axe while the plane was in the air.

The pilots, who witnesses said were covered in blood, managed to land the small Kato Air plane which was flying seven passengers

Passengers said the attacker, a man of Algerian origin in his 30s, stood up without warning just minutes before the plane landed and walked to the open cockpit to attack the pilots. Some passengers screamed in fear while two others managed to overpower him.

The Nordland hospital in Bodö said that three injured men were being treated for head injuries and that one had a deep cut in the forehead. None of the injuries are considered life threatening though.

Passengers on board the plane said that the injured pilots gave them a thumbs-up signal  to let them know that they would land safely, after warning the air control tower about the attack. Police say they do not yet know how the man had managed to bring an axe on board the plane.
