Swedish Police Out-Rank Military in Terrorist Attack

Published torsdag 30 september 2004 kl 15.04

Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson has announced that Swedish police would have authority over military forces used to combat any terrorist attacks in this Scandinavian country.

The military has long been demanding command over its own troops even in a domestic crisis, but Swedish tradition bars the use of the military to fight crimes.

This is the result of the infamous Ådalen tragedy during a 1931 strike – when troops fired on protesting demonstrators – killing 5.
