Sweden’s aid minister Carin Jämtin has criticized the Bush administration for withholding millions of dollars in congressionally approved assistance to the United Nations Population Fund because it says the fund helped China manage programs that involved abortions.

Jämtin expressed disappointment at U.S policy and said the supply of medicine and maternity-welfare benefits that the fund provides is directly connected to a decrease in deaths of young children and mothers in developing nations.

She said the United States should release its funding for prenatal and antenatal care clinics served by the U.N.program.
