The 2004 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was announced earlier in Stockholm today. American researchers Richard Axel and Linda B. Buck were awarded the Prize for their ground breaking efforts to better understand, and explain, our sense of smell.

The physiology or medicine prize announcement is the first of the 6 nobel prize categories to be announced.

The remaining 5 category winners will be announced over the next 2 weeks in Stockholm and Oslo.
