Plenty of Dead Fish in the Sea

Published måndag 25 oktober 2004 kl 14.46

Large amounts of fish caught on the West coast are thrown dead back into the sea.

According to Swedish television news, two thousand tons of dead fish are estimated to be thrown overboard each year. That’s two thirds of all cod, and between 60 and 70 percent of other fish, including crayfish.

Fisherman blame EU quotas and say that once they’ve filled their allowance, the cod they catch when fishing for other fish are then disposed of overboard. Fisherman Kjell Sörensson says as a professional, it’s terrible to waste so much.

Agriculture Minister Ann-Christin Nykvist says better technical solutions need to be found.  She also says we need to be prepared to be more selective when it comes to how we fish.
