Fire engine cameras never used

Published måndag 9 april 2012 kl 12.44

Firefighters in Malmö have never used security cameras which were mounted on top of their fire engines as a visible deterrent to stone throwing youths in the suburb of Rosengård. SR Malmö reports that it is not certain that the fire station will continue to be allowed to have permission to use the cameras after the permit runs out in December.

"One must weigh the security interest of firefighters against the private integrity interest. The permit runs out in December and then we will carry out a new test, and look at how the cameras have worked," says Henrik Kvennberg, at the County Administrative Board to SR Malmö.

After numerous incidents of stone throwing and the throwing of fireworks, the fire authority in Malmö asked for permission in 2009 to film with security cameras in Rosengård. The idea was to deter the youths as well as catch them on film.
