Winter tires could become requirement for trucks

Published onsdag 11 april 2012 kl 18.50

Trucks and other heavy vehicles are exempt from a law that requires all vehicles on Swedish roads to use winter tires between December 1 and March 31. But that exclusion something Infrastructure Minister Catharina Elmsäter Svärd wants to change.

Figures released by the Transport Administration show one third of all trucks that slid off roads last year did not have winter tires on, Swedish Radio News reports.

“Most vehicles on our roads have good tires,” Elmsäter Svärd said. “But we also know that out of those who are involved in accident many have bad tires. They usually don’t even follow the requirements that we imposed last year that they should have at least 5 millimeter groove depth.”

The minister wants the new rules to start as early as December this year.
