Saudi: no Swedish weapons factory planned

Published söndag 15 april 2012 kl 14.05

The Saudi Arabian government has issued its first comment on the weapons scandal that has shaken Swedish politics, reports the AFP news agency.

The Saudi state news agency says that "The Saudi defence ministry affirms that no accord has been signed in the past with the friendly kingdom of Sweden to build a weapons factory in Saudi Arabia and that no such project exists."

The Swedish government has also said in the past that the plans for a weapons facility never led to any specific agreement with Saudi Arabia.
Swedish Radio reporters broke the story in early March, releasing leaked documents showing plans to set up a facility to repair and upgrade Saudi armour-piercing weapons. The Swedish government says that the law has been followed at all times.
