Sweden first choice for child asylum seekers

Published måndag 16 april 2012 kl 16.29

A new study shows that Sweden is the EU country that recieves the highest number of unaccompanied child asylum seekers.

News agency TT reports that the study, carried out by international migration organisation IGC, shows that the number of children and young people under the age of 18 seeking asylum in Sweden without a parent or legal guardian has more than tripled since 2006.

The children mainly come from Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq. According to Michael Ribbenvik at the Swedish Migration Board, the chances of being granted asylum are highest in Sweden, and the living conditions for the children while they are waiting for a decision are good.

As the number of children increases, there are concerns about whether Sweden has the capacity to grant more children asylum.
