Karin Enström has been appointed minister of defence. Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt made the announcement on a press conference today.

Enström has been in parliament since 1998 and has a military background. Since 2010 she has been the chairperson of the foreign affairs committee.

At the press conference Enström said she would continue to reform the Swedish military to meet future demands.

“The Cold War is over and the threat against our security is broader today. Threats need to be met not just with military means,” she told reporters.

Former defense minister Sten Tolgfors resigned three weeks ago. Tolgfors is facing an investigation over his part in an arms deal with Saudi Arabia.

But when he resigned Tolgfors denied that it had anything to do with the Saudi Arabia weapons scandal saying that he was stepping down due to pressure from his family.
