It remains unclear what the plutonium that Sweden shipped to the United States in February will be used for.

Over three kilos of the material, which is a key ingredient used in building nuclear weapons, was shipped from Sweden as part of a secret deal.

Foreign minister Carl Bildt has said that the plutonium will be destroyed. According to Swedish Radio however, there are no mentions of this in the agreement between the two countries.

The only thing the United States has revealed is that the plutonium will not be used for military purposes.

Lars Hildingsson at the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority told Swedish Radio that Sweden will not actually find out anything about what the plutonium will be used for.

"The responsibility does not lie with Sweden anymore", he says. "We have no control over it."
