Bear kills and eats cub in front of zoo onlookers

Published måndag 30 april 2012 kl 09.58

A jealous and bloody drama played out in the bear area at a zoo in Skåne late Sunday afternoon. A male bear attacked and violently killed one of his male cubs, in front of the shocked onlookers, reports news agency TT. The male bear then began to eat the cub, before zoo workers managed to distract him.

It is mating season for bears and the adult male bear saw his male cub bears as rivals.

"This behavior is normal for bears when they live out in the wild, but this usually happens when young bears become older, and it's absolutely nothing we could have prevented," says Michael Norrdahl, the head of the zoo, to the local newspaper Skånskan. "There were no signs of trouble and it was very calm before the attack."

The attack came at a bad time for the park. Sunday was the busiest day of the year so far.

Managers from Skånes Djurpark will meet on Monday to discuss the incident.
