As the Gothia Cup youth soccer football tournament wound up in Gothenburg Saturday, news came that a 16 year girl has filed a complaint with the police about an attempted rape.

According to the newspaper Göteborgs-Posten the girl and another girl were in the room where her team was staying during the tournament on Wednesday, when three boys in their late teens who were also taking part in the Gothia Cup entered the room. She says they held the friend while one of the boys tried to rape the 16 year old.

The Gothia Cup organizers sent a counsellor to the girls’ team afterwards, and offered to house them elsewhere. They declined, and extra guards were provided. The police investigation continues.

Otherwise, police and organizers have expressed satisfaction with this year’s Gothia Cup, the largest soccer tournament in the world. More than 37,000 young people from 80 nations took part in the week long event.
