Bulgarian berry-pickers begin to return home

Berry-pickers waiting outside the Bulgarian embassy in Stockholm

Ten of the stranded berry-pickers here were able to fly home to Bulgaria Saturday, thanks to funds sent by the mayor of a small town in western Bulgaria.

Sunday morning there were still around 15 Bulgarians outside their country’s embassy in Stockholm, as embassy officials tried to find tickets so they could return home.

Several hundred Bulgarians came to Sweden this summer hoping to earn money picking berries in the forests.

Many say they were talked into coming by unknown men, then dumped in the forests under very poor living conditions. Several have filed police complaints accusing those who brought them here with human trafficking, and one Bulgarian has been arrested for the offence.
