76 polecats disappeared overnight while in police custody following a raid on their owner, according to newspaper Hallands Nyheter.

A total of 761 polecats were rescued from the breeder, who was selling the animals for animal research. They were then to be handed over the next day to a Danish breeder to be looked after, but by then there were only 685 in police custody. A tenth of the animals had mysteriously disappeared overnight.

Police have now launched an investigation to see what actually happened to the missing animals, or if the head count was wrong from the very beginning.
