JAS Gripen jets to cost more than expected
The new JAS Gripen fighter jets are to be more expensive than the Swedish Armed Forces had expected. The Armed Forces have given the government information on how much the fighter planes will cost, and which defense projects will need to be pushed back in order to finance them, reports news agency TT.
However, Jan Salestrand from the Swedish Armed Forces told TT he did not want to comment on how much more expensive the planes will be, or on the plans for cutbacks in other areas.
The investment in the fighter jets has drawn criticism for being too costly. It has been estimated that 60 of the new planes will cost the government US$5 billion.
The government has said the decision on whether to develop the planes is still on hold.
