A homeless woman in the southern city of Malmö was not allowed to sign up with the national employment service because of her social situation, reports Swedish Radio.

The Parliamentary Ombudsmen have criticised the service in Malmö. Legally, everyone who has the right to work in Sweden, also has the right to sign up and receive help from the unemployment service.

The unemployment service has admitted making a mistake by denying the woman service.

Evalena Grane-Sanden at the employment service in Malmö told Swedish Radio that efforts will be made to inform staff about the mistake to prevent a similar situation from occuring in the future.

"This is an unfortunate case and we regret that it happened", she said.
