Trans-people a target for persecution

Half way through Stockholm’s Pride Week, the figures from helplines and the Crime Prevention Council indicate that transgender or transsexual individuals are a particular target for violence and persecution.

While complaints about hate crimes directed against homosexuals have dropped in recent years, the Swedish Crime Prevention Council says those aimed at trans-people have increased. And there is a fear there may be very many unreported cases.

The hotline run by the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights says that at least 15 percent of the calls they receive are from transgender individuals.

Many victims reportedly do not file police complaints because of fears of how they will be treated by the criminal justice system. And when there are complaints, they very seldom get to court. No one has yet been convicted of a transgender or transsexual hate crime in Sweden.
