Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has expressed regret over Kofi Annan’s resignation as the international peace envoy in Syria, commenting on Twitter:

“I highly regret Kofi Annan's decision to step down from Syria efforts, but split in Security Council made the political efforts impossible.”

However, on his blog Bildt writes that it would be fundamentally wrong of the international community to give up its efforts, which must lead to some kind of political arrangement for a transition to a new regime that does not end in general and protracted chaos.

Bildt says he hopes Kofi Annan’s critique of the situation to the members of the Security Council, the countries in the region, and the parties in Syria “lead to a new realization that a political process is necessary”.
